The Kansas City Chiefs may have lost to the Patriots on Sunday in overtime, but Chiefs fans still have plenty of reason for optimism.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ season may have ended on Sunday in dramatic fashion in overtime against the New England Patriots, but there is still plenty of room for optimism.

Tom Brady was playing in his eighth straight AFC Championship game, Patrick Mahomes was playing in his first, during his first year as a starter.

Tom Brady is 41 years old, Patrick Mahomes is just 23. The Tom Brady dynasty, weather you can see it or not, is coming to a close. And the Patrick Mahomes dynasty is just getting started.

For Chiefs fans, they will have to wait another year to wait and see if the Chiefs can make it to the Super Bowl, but they should do it with a lot of optimism, because the start of the Chiefs dynasty is here and there is plenty of room for optimism.

Draft Picks

A key piece to the Chiefs building their dynasty will be through the 2019 NFL Draft. It is no secret how bad the Chiefs defense was this year. Luckily for Chiefs fans, the team holds four picks in the first three rounds.

Round 1 Pick 29

Round 2 Pick 61

Round 2 Pick 64 – From Los Angeles Rams

Round 3 Pick 93

The Chiefs will need to capitalize and turn these picks into defensive starters if they hope to build off of a great 2018. They desperately need secondary help, and a run stopping defensive lineman.

They were tied for first in sacks as a team this year, so as long as they re-sign Dee Ford, they do not have to worry too much about the pass rush.

The Chiefs’ need at cornerback may cause them to trade up, which is fine given their draft stock. If the they can come out of the draft with a high caliber corner and a run stopping defensive tackle, it could help this defense take a major step in 2019.

Offensive Weapons

This Chiefs team does not lack for offensive weapons. They were aggressive in free agency last year, adding Sammy Watkins to their arsenal. They found a gem in Tyreek Hill late in the draft, and have the leagues best tight end in Travis Kelce.

This trio of pass catchers is among the leagues best and a huge reason that the Chiefs were able to finish 2018 with the leagues number one scoring offense.

Another key offensive weapon is running back Damien Williams, who recently signed a new two year contract extension. When Kareem Hunt was let go from the team, it was Williams who stepped up to replace Hunt. In his seven games as the starter, Williams accumulated 647 scrimmage yards and 10 touchdowns.

One thing is for certain, with an offense loaded with this many playmakers, Chiefs fans can expect to continue to see one of the leagues best offenses for years to come, especially with Andy Reid calling the shots.

Patrick Mahomes

What Patrick Mahomes did this year is absolutely incredible. His 5,097 yards were good for second in the league. He was also the leagues leader in touchdown passes, with 50. Mahomes tossed just 12 interceptions in his 580 passing attempts. The first year starter was incredible and is the biggest reason as to why the Chiefs made it to the AFC Championship game.

Despite having one of the leagues worst defenses, Mahomes and the offense were able to bring this team to the AFC Championship game and go down to the wire in OT against Tom Brady. It was Mahomes who sparked a near second half comeback. Imagine if Mahomes had even an average defense.

Mahomes is not lacking offensive help, or a head coach. All he is lacking is a defense, which they should be able to address in free agency. Mahomes is going to be good for a very long time, and despite losing on Sunday, he should keep his head held high for what he did in just his first year as a starter.

dark. Next. 2019 NFL mock draft update

In fact, all Chiefs fans should keep their heads high. They should remain optimistic as their team has the looks at being one of the leagues next dynasty’s. If they can get a little bit of defensive help, we could very easily be writing about them in the Super Bowl at this time next year.
