Jacksonville Jaguars: Nick Foles a strong possibility with DeFilippo
John DeFilippo did a phenomenal job with Nick Foles in his time with the Philadelphia Eagles. Now the two could reunite with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
John DeFilippo was one of the hottest coaches on the market last year and he ultimately landed with the Minnesota Vikings, along with their plethora of cap space and stellar offensive weaponry.
Unfortunately for all parties involved, it didn’t work out at all, and the Vikings actually fired DeFilippo during the season. The was a major shock with the way DeFilippo had worked with the quarterbacks in his time with the Philadelphia Eagles.
While with the Eagles, Nick Foles and Carson Wentz developed into two very solid starting quarterback options and Foles ended up leading his team with Wentz sidelined due to injury to a Super Bowl win.
The combination of DeFilippo and Foles — along with Doug Pederson’s leadership, of course — generated buzz throughout the postseason and helped DeFilippo land a huge job opportunity. It also put the Eagles in position to decline offers for very high draft picks for Foles, who was expected to be needed at the start of 2018 with Wentz still recovering from injury.
Though the Eagles would probably prefer to keep Foles, the reality is they can’t afford him anymore and they are going to have to let him go to the highest bidder or potentially just let him walk.
Though DeFilippo was fired by the Vikings he has now been hired by the Jacksonville Jaguars, who just so happen to be preparing to move on from Blake Bortles, their starting quarterback since 2013.
Bortles’ ineptitude has forced the Jaguars’ hand, and the hiring of DeFilippo as offensive coordinator could be the first step toward the team signing or trading for Foles.
It makes a lot of sense.
It seems Foles and DeFilippo work well together, the Jaguars have a quarterback opening, and there’s no doubt Tom Coughlin looks at the roster he has and feels like his team should be contending.
Foles may not be one of the ‘elite’ quarterbacks in the NFL but he’s certainly quite accomplished and he works very well within the Eagles’ offense. He and DeFilippo could try to re-create some of the magic from the 2017-18 Eagles season.
