The Indianapolis Colts fought their way back from obscurity to a 10-6 record and a win in the wild card round. However, they finally ran out of magic.

It’s clear this team is back in the thick of the AFC picture but they still need a lot of work before they can be considered true contenders. The great news? They have a boat load of salary cap space at their disposal. Current projections have them over a ridiculous $117 million. That means they can go hogwild in free agency if they wish, searching for star talent to upgrade their roster.

Looking at the landscape of things, here are five names who could give them a big push towards finally getting back to the Super Bowl.

Le’Veon Bell (RB)

Just imagine it. Andrew Luck and Le’Veon Bell in the same backfield. With all due respect to Marlon Mack, who has done good work for the Colts in 2018, he’s not on the same level as Bell in terms of ability to take over games. Bell not only can run the ball like a true feature back, but his versatility as a pass catcher would also offer so many options for Frank Reich and that coaching staff. In a league defined by offensive star power, he gives them another piece.

Randall Cobb (WR)

The crop of free agent receivers isn’t the strongest for this coming year but that doesn’t mean there won’t be options. Outside of T.Y. Hilton, the Colts don’t really have another threat that forces defenses to adjust. Randall Cobb has struggled with health issues of late, but when he’s on he can still be that playmaker who can bust coverages when they can afford it the least. He’ll be able to give them an experienced option who creates matchups inside.

Demarcus Lawrence (DE)

More from NFL Mocks

Most assume that the Dallas Cowboys will either extend Lawrence before March or use the franchise tag to buy time. Then again until that actually happens, there’s still the possibility he becomes available. If so, the Colts have to be all over that. They badly need a legitimate pass rusher on the edge and have loads of money to meet any price that Lawrence would demand. Enough to even overpay if they wished, which would be excusable.

Grady Jarrett (DT)

Pretty much the same situation in Atlanta as Dallas. Expectations are the Falcons will move to lock up their young defensive tackle. He’s become an integral part of their pass rush, filling that critical three-technique role. He delivered six sacks in 2018, a career-high. Odds are he could get even better if the team bothers to improve its pass coverage. The Colts run a similar type of defense that has the same demands for a three-technique.

Landon Collins (S)

Malik Hooker bowed out with yet another injury issue. It’s becoming apparent that he is unreliable and the team may have to reinforce the position so as to be prepared for him having such problems in the future. Landon Collins may not be the pure ballhawk type that Hooker is but he’s a smart, instinctive, and versatile player who can make things happen both in coverage and around the line of scrimmage. He can be a huge asset to their secondary.
