Five Questions From You!

Q: Who are the top coverage linebackers right now for the 2019 draft?

A: A few names come to mind for this draft. Devin White is someone who can operate in space with his speed, along with Michigan linebacker Devin Bush.

Two other names to watch in this category are Bobby Okereke (Stanford) and Joe Giles-Harris (Duke).

Q: Who is this year’s Marcus Davenport for pass rushers?

A: As far as someone who can raise their draft stock, Old Dominion’s Oshane Ximines is an obvious choice. He has a chance to dominate at the Senior Bowl and get his name into round one conversation.

Another name to watch is Louisiana Tech’s Jaylon Ferguson.

Q: Early thought on deepest/lightest positions to draft excluding special teams?

A: The deepest positions have to be defensive line and edge this year, with wide receiver close behind. Defensive line and edge have top talent along with a lot of talent, while the receiver class is deep in that any type of complementary receiver you want, they’re in this draft.

The lightest positions are quarterback (Haskins/Murray leading the way), and the safety class, now that Deionte Thompson is returning to school.

Q: Ideal pick for the Packers (second) 1st round draft pick (via Saints) and would the Saints be content having Marcus Davenport over the person selected?

A: Let’s say the Packers draft an edge rusher with their first pick. I think an ideal pick would be Kansas State’s Dalton Risner or Oklahoma’s Cody Ford. Both can play on the interior to protect Aaron Rodgers.

I feel like at this point, the Saints wanted Davenport and are going to ride with him. His potential is higher than the two names I mentioned, so the Saints should be content at the moment.

Q: With the QB market as it is, can you assess the value of a 2019 first rounder vs. a 2020 and a 2021 first rounder?

A: As far as the QB market goes, having a first rounder right now is probably not as valuable as down the road. I know there’s a ton of speculation to this right now, but the fact is is that this current quarterback class lacks the superstar potential.

Both Haskins and Murray could be good quarterback, but with 2020 potentially having Tua/Fromm/Herbert, and 2021 with Lawrence/Justin Fields, teams are looking at that saying that quarterback-needy teams are planning for those future drafts, and having a top pick could land your team so much in a trade should your quarterback situation be solid.
