The Friday Five: Head Coaching, NFL Draft Prospects, Your Questions
Every week, The Friday Five takes on five different topics surrounding the football world. NFL coaching and NFL Draft prospects are on the mind this week.
Hi there football fans! Welcome to the first edition of The Friday Five, which will have five thoughts on five different football topics every Friday.
We are in the thick of the NFL Playoffs with the divisional round kicking off Saturday, and draft season is upon us as well. With all that, plus the coaching carousel alive and well, there’s so much to get to on this Friday.
Let’s dive in.
Five Head Coaching Thoughts
- The Sean McVay tree is already bonkers. Basically, now, if you know Sean McVay or have worked with him, you’re getting a head coaching job. The Packers hired Matt LaFleur, who worked with McVay in Washington, and had jobs in Atlanta and Tennessee afterwards. The Bengals hired Zac Taylor, who has just one season as the Rams offensive coordinator under his belt. It shows what the NFL thinks of Sean McVay.
- Bruce Arians to Tampa Bay might be my favorite hire so far. The Bucs needed a change after consistently finishing at the bottom of the NFC South. We know Arians is a quarterback whisperer and runs a vertical offense. He resurrected Carson Palmer in Arizona and nearly got them to a Super Bowl. He could bring the best out of Jameis Winston and make the south that much more interesting.
- I’m surprised to see Adam Gase get the Jets job. They were linked to many other candidates, and to go with a guy who didn’t succeed in Miami is interesting. He’s a good coordinator, but I’m unsure of his head coaching prowess.
- Kliff Kingsbury to Arizona was the shocker. From signing with USC just weeks ago to the NFL, Kingsbury will have a steep learning curve. He does get to build a better offense for Josh Rosen, but he needs to bring in a good staff to keep things smooth.
- One name that was surprising not to hear anything about was Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bienemy. I’m sure he will get offers next season while he builds his resume in Kansas City under Andy Reid.
