Alex Smith likely won’t be around in 2019 as starting quarterback for the Redskins. That broken leg proved even more catastrophic than it looked, which is hard to believe. So the team has to start looking at contingency plans. Their hopes for finding a replacement in the draft are limited given their position on the board. This means they may have to get creative, perhaps bringing in more bodies to create competition. This is one way to do it.

Nick Mullen made a strong impression under difficult circumstances in 2018. A third-string rookie undrafted free agent, he was elevated to the starting job after injuries struck the quarterback position. All things considered, he showed considerable promise with his ability to process the game and deliver accurate passes in a timely fashion. Maybe under the watchful eye of Jay Gruden, he could become something even more.
