People may criticize the New York Jets for hiring Adam Gase considering he didn’t exactly with a lot with the Miami Dolphins during his three-year run there.

Then again the Jets can claim they have something that the Dolphins never really did. A quarterback that Gase can actually do something with. Sam Darnold is infinitely more talented and capable than anything Miami had. That includes Ryan Tannehill who was serviceable at times but never truly reliable. Darnold can do many more things on the field and open up Gase’s playbook like never before. It’s something he’s wanted for years.

Keep in mind when this man worked with Peyton Manning, the offenses finished 1st and 2nd respectively in points scored. Manning set NFL records in his late 30s that seemed impossible and did it with his neck hacked to pieces after several surgeries to a point where his arm had a fraction of its former strength. A big reason he excelled was thanks to Gase’s coaching. It’s a big reason the former QB has talked him up to teams for years.

If the Jets wanted somebody to be good for Darnold becoming the best he can be? They chose correctly.

Adam Gase must prove he learned from mistakes in Miami

With this being said, Gase isn’t entirely at fault for what happened in Miami. A lot of the problems the team hand were from his own decision-making from how he handled personnel to the frosty relationship he often had with the media. Odds are he won’t be able to get away with a lot of that in New York. Sure fixing Darnold is the big job ahead but that alone won’t make him a successful head coach for the Jets. Greater men have tried and failed in that spot.

That being said, Gase is still young and brings a lot of valuable learning experiences with him. He also has the most important position on his roster locked down. The job now is to build the foundation around Darnold with weapons, an offensive line, and a defense. He’ll need help from the front office, something he didn’t quite get before. It will be fascinating to see how the situation develops.
