CFP Championship Preview: #1 Alabama vs. #2 Clemson
Prediction
Prior to the season, I was high on the Clemson Tigers and felt this was a championship team so it’s only right that I stick to my word.
This has the makings of a classic. Two legitimate offenses capable of beating defenses with balance in the run and passing game. Two defenses that have a front seven capable of setting the tone of a game and able to control the game with their skill sets.
A healthier Tagovailoa can help the Alabama offense thanks to his ability to pull the ball down and take off at any given minute. Of course, the presence of a wide receiving corps that has Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs, Jaylen Waddle, and Devonta Smith is enough to keep the Clemson defense from keying in on the backfield. Look for Alabama to try to hit a few passing plays early and lean on the run game somewhat to limit the strength of the Clemson defense which is the pass rush.
A lot will fall on the shoulders of the young quarterback in Trevor Lawrence. No doubt will Alabama throw blitz packages at him and disguise coverage on the backend. As great as he has been and as dynamic that Clemson offense has been all season, the game can come crashing down if Alabama is able to have their way with Lawrence.
Mistake-free football will win this game and a shootout is likely to occur. What could be the difference here is the Alabama offensive line being able to control the Clemson defensive line and keep them at bay. I’m not quite certain they will. Take a look at the SEC Championship and see how bogged down the Alabama offense can be with mediocre play from the offensive line.
That can prove to be the difference in a high-scoring game that will come down to the closing minutes.
