Philadelphia Eagles plan to trade Nick Foles after season
By Erik Lambert
The Philadelphia Eagles are preparing for their biggest game of the season in Chicago and their best hope of victory rests on Nick Foles.
The man has enjoyed a Jim Plunkett-type of run late in his career. He came off the bench in 2017 and led the team on its first-ever Super Bowl victory run. Now it’s a year later and the story seems to be repeating itself. He’s playing quite well of late, giving the players, coaches and fans all sorts of confidence that they’ll go the distance yet again.
Some have even speculated that if this run of success continues much further, the team may have good cause to consider giving the ball to Foles permanently. After all, he’s clearly effective in that Doug Pederson system, has the trust of the wide receivers and the locker room believes in him. However, it would appear this is a mere fantasy.
According to Ian Rapaport of NFL.com, regardless of what happens in Chicago or the rest of the way, the plans are for Carson Wentz to be the guy and for Foles to probably be gone next season.
"“While Eagles quarterback Nick Foles takes the field today, the hope in Philadelphia is that any questions about his offseason wait a few weeks. As far as they are concerned, they can discuss it in February.Whenever it’s over for the Eagles, they will have to address how they are going to move on from Foles and hand the ball back to franchise QB Carson Wentz. And while they have yet to fully dig into the mechanism they’ll use — do they exercise Foles’ $20 million option or franchise-tag him — one aspect is relatively clear. The Eagles are expected to have a quality trade market for Foles, sources say.”"
The timing of this Foles news is curious for the Philadelphia Eagles

This announcement isn’t exactly surprising. Foles’ value is likely to never be higher given his productivity and age. Wentz, despite the health issues, has a much longer future ahead of him. The Eagles need to stay focused on the long-term. It makes good football and business sense. However, the timing of this revelation coming out is unusual and perhaps not ideal.
Foles is about to play his first career road playoff game against the #1 defense in the NFL. It’s going to take all of his focus to play well. So for this announcement to come out that the team likely plans to trade him regardless of what happens, it is difficult to see how this benefits their situation. If anything one would think it might impact his focus, even if it’s a tiny bit.
Foles is a humble man who understands his place. Still, he’s a competitor and after all he’s done for the team, it would have to sting somewhat for them to view his place on the roster with such a cold pure business gaze. Be that as it may, he’s a professional and will carry on. Then again it is difficult not to feel a bit sorry for the guy given what he’s done for that franchise.
It will also be interesting to see how the fans in Philadelphia respond to this news.
