The Washington Redskins’ latest blunder should spell the end for Bruce Allen. He’s always a day late and a dollar short.

The passion football fans feel for their team defies logic. If only it were just a game, or just a business. But, for some reason, it’s much more than that. When your team’s general manager is always a day late and a dollar short, you can’t help but wonder how much longer this insanity can persist.

Bruce Allen’s mistakes have been well documented over the years. He’s made bad trades, entered into ridiculous contracts, played a large part in keeping players that should have been cut, and cut players that ending up starting for other teams.

His latest fiasco, one would think, will be the straw that broke the camel’s back. I am, of course, referring to the situation with wide receiver Simmie Cobbs. I know a lot of people were surprised that Cobbs went undrafted. There was talk about an ankle injury that had been slow to heal but nothing definitive ever came out related to why a team wasn’t willing to take a flyer on him with a late round pick.

Suffice to say, many Redskins fans were elated when Washington signed him as an undrafted college free agent. After all, this was a guy that a lot of knowledgeable football experts had been very high on. Athlon Sports had him rated as the fifth best WR in the 2018 draft and the 49th best player in the country.

They, in fact, went so far as to draw comparisons between Cobbs and DeAndre Hopkins. They referred to him as the most physically impressive receiver in the 2018 draft class. They talked about his large catch radius and said,

"“He’s a tough runner after the catch, capable of overpowering corners once the ball is in his hands and often requiring multiple defensive backs to drag him down.”Athlon Sports"

The 6’3″ 220 pounder from Indiana had over a 1,000 receiving yards as a sophomore while averaging 17.3 yards per catch. Then last year, despite being hampered by an ankle injury, he had 841 yards and scored eight touchdowns.

Lindy’s Sports seemed just as impressed giving him the same draft grade as DJ Moore – the first WR chosen in the draft. They went on to say that Cobbs was,

"“Experienced against off, zone, and press coverage, showing the quick feet and coordinated hands to escape the jam, enough speed to eat up the cushion (he ran a 4.5) and awareness to settle in soft spots to give his QB room to deliver passes.”Lindy’s Sports"

Gee, those sound like some qualities that could have come in handy for either Alex Smith, Colt McCoy, Mark Sanchez, or Josh Johnson.

None of that matters now as the New Orleans Saints, in preparation for their march to the Super Bowl, signed Cobbs to their active roster. The Redskins, of course, countered with their offer that they were about to move him from their practice squad to their active roster.

Once again, the Redskins’ front office was late with the trigger. Meanwhile, the Redskins lose the most promising player on their practice squad. You can’t help but wonder what were they waiting for.

Paul Richardson, Robert Davis, Cam Sims, and Trey Quinn are all on IR. Josh Doctson is hurt. So is Jamison Crowder. Maurice Harris had two back to back 100-yard games and then disappeared from the game plan. Jordan Reed is gone. Brian Quick is gone.

So, it begs the question…If the Redskins had a guy that the best team in the NFL felt belonged on their active roster, what were Bruce Allen’s thoughts? It’s almost as if he’s not paying attention. If there is something that is distracting him I can only hope that he has a lot more time next season to give his undivided attention to whatever it is that seems to keep him from doing his job as the Redskins GM.

Cobbs was brutally honest about the situation. He said he knew he should have been on the Redskins active roster and was sure that he could have contributed. He explained that he had to decide if he wanted to be mentored by Drew Brees or Mark Sanchez and Josh Johnson.

Did he want to play for a team that was going to the Super Bowl or one that was on the fast track to locking up a top 10 pick in the draft? Did he want to sit in meetings and listen to Sean Payton or sit around wondering who the Redskins coach will be next year?

Cobbs’ conclusion was that it was a “No brainer.”

I can think of something else that should be a no brainer. Enough is enough!
