NFL Honors Predictions: Can anybody catch Aaron Donald?
By Erik Lambert
Defensive Rookie of the Year: Derwin James (S, Los Angeles Chargers)
It’s not just the offense that has led the Chargers to their impressive 9-3 record. The defense has more than done its part, and the man leading the way is none other than their 1st round draft pick. Derwin James was a revelation the moment he stepped on the field. His combination of size, power, and range made him a true all-purpose safety with 3.5 sacks and three interceptions. Not to mention 81 tackles. Just a tremendous year.
Closest threat – Darius Leonard of the Indianapolis Colts. Thinking back it’s hard to imagine how in the world Leonard fell to the 2nd round because he’s been the driving force behind a major resurgence on defense for the Colts. He has 122 tackles already this season with six sacks, four forced fumbles, and an interception. He’s literally been everywhere. The only reason he’s not top dog is due to missing time with injury and his defense still not ranking as high as James’.
