Round 2, Pick 60

David Montgomery – RB – Iowa State

I went back and forth with this pick a few times. The Texans could use a corner or safety on defense but I wasn’t in love with any available at this point in the draft. There is a chance they go after Kris Boyd or Jaquan Johnson but I also see running back as an overlooked hole for this offense.

Yes, Lamar Miller is running well this year and there is the hope of D’onta Foreman returning. However, Miller has been up and down as a Texan and only has a year remaining on his contract after 2018. He could also possibly be cut for almost no cap hit after this year. D’onta Foreman showed promise before his injury, but it has been almost a year now since he suffered his Achilles injury back in week 11 of 2017.

David Montgomery could be the missing piece to the Texans explosive offense. With Watson at quarterback, and a trio of DeAndre Hopkins, Demaryius Thomas, and Will Fuller, Montgomery would fill in nice at running back.

Montgomery is a strong downhill runner who can bulldoze through the middle of the line. He is tough to bring down and never gives up. What makes him unique is his speed and ability to bust runs outside if the middle is not open. Once in open field, Montgomery can be very tough to bring down.

Montgomery can also catch passes out of the backfield, making him a dual threat running back that can stay on the field for all three downs.
