The Most Underachieving NFL Head Coaches Ever For All 32 Teams
By Erik Lambert
Jim Mora (New Orleans Saints)
This is difficult to say because Jim Mora was the man who turned the Saints into winners for the first time in the 1980s. Their first forays into the playoffs were because of him. However, it was also because of him that they squandered numerous opportunities to reach the Super Bowl. People so often forget how good those Saints teams were. Especially on defense.
From 1986 to 1992, New Orleans ranked in the top 10 in points allowed seven times. That includes 1st in back-to-back seasons in ’91 and 92. They had four Pro Bowl linebackers including Hall of Famer Rickey Jackson. It was a simple case that Mora consistently failed to correct the issues on offense. In four playoff trips, New Orleans scored 10, 6, 20, and 20 points respectively.
The offense never ranked in the top 10 once in the 11 years he was there.
