Ohio State Does Just Enough

It started off in disastrous fashion and ended in on one simple play.

On a day where the #10 Ohio State Buckeyes (10-1, 7-1 Big Ten) found themselves teetering on a major upset, a missed opportunity by Maryland (5-6, 3-5) handed the Buckeyes a win that many will not consider one that they deserved.

Touchdown runs of 75- and 80-yards by Maryland running back Anthony McFarland gave the Terrapins a 14-3 lead barely six minutes into the game and things looked as if the Buckeyes were in for a very long day.

It also did not look promising for the Buckeyes as Maryland cornerback RaVon Davis completed a 37-yard interception return for a touchdown on the first drive after halftime. The scoreboard read 31-17 in favor of Maryland and things looked even bleaker. But a 21-point fourth quarter by the Buckeyes tied the game with 40 seconds remaining in regulation.

Both teams traded touchdowns in the overtime period but Maryland went for a two-point conversion and the win but missed an easy pass that let the Buckeyes off the hook.

Looming for the Buckeyes is a home matchup against #4 Michigan in what is considered by many as the best rivalry in college football. Winner of that contest will head to the Big Ten championship to take on #22 Northwestern.

With that said, it can’t go unstated that the Buckeyes looked unfocused and outplayed mostly. Now may not be the right time to face a red-hot Michigan team and games like this are proof.
