Chicago Bears: Dave Duerson takes over for Todd Bell

By 1984, strong safety Todd Bell had emerged as a potential star for the Chicago Bears defense. He had four interceptions that year and went to his first Pro Bowl. Most expected that to continue in 1985, but he never showed up to join the team. Bell became immersed in a contract dispute that forced him to sit out the entire season. A decision that may have ruined his career.

Given little choice, the Bears inserted third-year man Dave Duerson into Bell’s spot. The Bears defense went on to post historic numbers and won the Super Bowl with Duerson claiming his first of four Pro Bowl appearances. Bell returned the next season, but the contract issues lingered along with a hamstring injury. He never reached that peak form he showed in ’84 again.
