Grading the first-round rookie QBs at the halfway point of the season
By Joel Deering
10th Overall Pick – Josh Rosen – Arizona Cardinals
Games Started: 5
Record in Games Started: 2-3
Passing Stats: 55.6% completions for 1,072 yards, 5 TDs, 6 INTs and QB rating of 69.9.
Rushing Stats: 9 attempts for 48 yards and 0 TDs.
Analysis: If I could pick the most positive thing about Josh Rosen’s early NFL career, it’d be the fact that he’s beaten a division rival twice. Rosen’s two wins have both come against the 49ers. The 49ers aren’t great this season, but a division win is a division win, and Rosen has two of them.
Division wins aside, Rosen hasn’t been too promising. The numbers show Rosen being ranked fourth in QB rating, second in completion percentage, third in passing yards and third in TD passes among the five first-round rookie QBs. In other words, he’s been average among his fellow rookies.
The TD to INT ratio for Rosen needs to be better. He’s thrown more INTs than TDs. Rosen hasn’t made many spectacular plays with his arm or his feet. Because of the lack of big plays from Rosen, he hasn’t looked liked the future for the Cardinals. In my opinion, he looks like a future backup.
He’s still a rookie, so I’ll give him more time before making my final decision on him.
