#4: Jay Cutler breaks his thumb

For the briefest moment in time, it looked like Jay Cutler was ready to ascend to the star status Bears fans envisioned from him in 2011. After a difficult start to the season, he found his groove in helping the Bears to a five-game winning streak during which the offense was scoring 30 points per game. He was starting to garner MVP talk with his play.

Then it all came crashing down while trying to make a tackle attempt against the San Diego Chargers after throwing an interception. While he succeeded in helping to prevent a score, people didn’t know at the time that the effort caused him to land awkwardly on the turf, fracturing his right thumb. The injury knocked him out the rest of the season. Without him the offense went into a tailspin and the Bears won just one more game to finish 8-8, missing the playoffs.
