Jon Gruden could be joining history in the NFL Draft with three first round picks

After acquiring the Chicago Bears and Dallas Cowboys’ first round picks for Khalil Mack and Amari Cooper the Oakland Raiders now hold three picks in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Draft picks are treated like gold these days, so for the Raiders to own three is something we haven’t seen much.

In the history of the NFL Draft, a team has made at least three first round picks 11 times. The last time a team made three picks in the first round was the Cleveland Browns in 2017.

The New York Jets made four picks in the first round back in 2000, the only time that has been done.

San Francisco 49ers – 1961 (Jim Johnson, Bernie Casey, Billy Kimler)
New England Patriots – 1973 (John Hannah, Sam Cunningham, Darryl Stingley)
New England Patriots – 1976 (Mike Haynes, Pete Brock, Tim Fox)
Cincinnati Bengals – 1977 (Eddie Edwards, Wilson Whitley, Mike Cobb)
Los Angeles Chargers – 1983 (Billy Ray Smith Jr., Gary Anderson, Gill Byrd)
Oakland Raiders – 1988 (Tim Brown, Terry McDaniel, Scott Davis)
Dallas Cowboys – 1991 (Russell Maryland, Alvin Harper, Kelvin Pritchett)
Carolina Panthers – 1995 (Kerry Collins, Tyrone Poole, Blake Brockermeyer)
New York Jets – 2000 (Shaun Ellis, John Abraham, Chad Pennington, Anthony Becht)
Minnesota Vikings – 2013 (Sharrif Floyd, Xavier Rhodes, Cordarrelle Patterson)
Cleveland Browns – 2017 (Myles Garrett, David Njoku, Jabrill Peppers)

Carolina used three first round picks prior to their inaugural season in 1995. They originally held the number one overall pick as an expansion team, but traded it to the Cincinnati Bengals.

Ironically, the Bengals took Penn State running back Ki-Jana Carter and the Panthers used the Bengals original pick to take Nittany Lions quarterback Kerry Collins fifth overall.

Next. One player on the trade block for each NFL team. dark

For the Raiders sake they better hope they repeat the magic of the 1988 NFL Draft when they got Hall of Famer Tim Brown and five-time Pro Bowler Terry McDaniel.
