Dallas Cowboys: Michael Irvin urges a trade for Amari Cooper
By Erik Lambert
The Dallas Cowboys played their best game of the season in pasting the listless Jacksonville Jaguars 40-7, but Michael Irvin thinks they need more.
Love him or hate him, Irvin knows two things. He knows what a good passing game looks like and he knows what a championship team looks like. He loves how the Cowboys look at the moment but believes they’re still missing a key piece in order to truly be a viable threat to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East and a contender for a possible Super Bowl run.
So what’s missing? Naturally the one thing Irvin knows best: a true go-to wide receiver. The Cowboys have a couple of solid pieces in Cole Beasley and the ascending Michael Gallup but nobody who can force defenses to adjust to them. Somebody who can get that extra man out of the box to ease the pressure on Ezekiel Elliott.
Irvin believes if Dallas wants to be bold and make a move to close that gap, then there’s one team they need to call. That’s the Oakland Raiders.
"“I need a young guy to go with Zeke and Dak that could play for a while and Amari Cooper would be the perfect guy. I know a lot of people are down on this guy right now but in ’15 and ’16 he went over a thousand yards and last year, ’17, he had seven touchdowns even though he missed two games. This guy right here is the missing piece to the Dallas Cowboys truly being a Super Bowl contender.”"
Raiders believed to be “open for business” with Jon Gruden in charge
Oakland made a profound statement before the season when they willingly gave up Khalil Mack to Chicago for draft picks. Head coach Jon Gruden hasn’t tried to hide his general dislike for the makeup of the team’s roster and has criticized GM Reggie McKenzie a number of times in public. If he was willing to deal Mack, then it’s a virtual guarantee other Raider staples can’t be far behind. The mercurial 24-year old receiver is the latest name in the rumor mill.
There have been plenty of accusations surrounding Cooper including ones that question his overall commitment to football. Some think he lacks passion for the game and it’s what continues to hold him back from reaching that next level. Maybe a change of scenery to Dallas might do him good. His explosiveness would certain be what they’re looking for. Whether they’re willing to meet the Raiders’ price is the big question.
