College Football Week Seven Takeaways: Top 10 turmoil
Top 10 teams taking blows
Minus #1 Alabama, #2 Ohio State, and #3 Clemson, just about every team in the top ten this past week either suffered an upset defeat or had to scratch and claw their way to a win.
On the road, #8 Georgia ran into a wall that was #5 LSU and found themselves staring at a 16-0 halftime deficit that eventually grew to a 29-9 deficit midway through the fourth quarter. The final result was a 36-16 win for the Tigers and a blow to the chin of the Bulldogs.
I mentioned Grier earlier and his lackluster night (11/15, 100 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) played a part in #13 West Virginia (was ranked 6th at kickoff) going down to Iowa Sate 30-14 to fall to 5-1 on the season. The Mountaineers are still a player in the Big 12 title race even with this loss but this was about as ugly as we’ve seen the Mountaineer offense in a very long time.
While they vault to fourth in the country in the AP poll after their win, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish needed a late fourth quarter touchdown to take the lead that ultimately led to a 19-14 win over 3-4 Pittsburgh. As a matter of fact, the Irish were down 14-6 late in the third quarter but the last two scores swung the game in their direction. USC, Florida State and a pesky Syracuse squad remains on the schedule for Notre Dame but 7-0 is 7-0.
We even saw #18 Penn State (ranked 8th at kickoff) fall at home to a Michigan State team that is probably not one of the finer squads that head coach Mark Dantonio has put together. A go-ahead touchdown with 19 seconds remaining gave the Spartans the upset win and gave the Nittany Lions their second conference loss of the season. A loss that all but dashed the hopes of Penn State finding their way into the Big Ten championship game.
