Khalil Mack on pace to topple Richard Dent‘s 17.5-sack mark

Few teams have perfected the art of sacking the quarterback quite like the Bears. No defense was better at it than the Buddy Ryan units of the 1980s. They set the record for most sacks in a season with 72 in 1984, and one of the big reasons that became a reality was the emergence of defensive end Richard Dent, who had 17.5 that year. It’s still the team record to this day.

Nobody has gotten remotely close since. Mark Anderson had 12 in 2006 and that’s the closest anyone else has gotten. That may finally be different. Khalil Mack is off to a torrid start in 2018 with five sacks in his first four games. That puts him on pace for 20 this season and he’ll have a number of sackable QBs on the schedule including Ryan Tannehill, Josh Allen, and others. That would be quite the debut season for a man in Chicago.
