Sayre: The Washington Redskins are lacking a receiver that can be the focal point in their offense.

Josh Doctson was drafted in 2016 to be that guy, and to be honest, his failure to develop coming from an offense that manufactured some of his targets could prevent the Redskins from spending this high of a pick on a receiver.

But Johnson’s talent is undeniable.

He’s raw as a route runner, but has playmaking ability in spades. He racked up 14 touchdowns last year for the Buffalo Bulls, and did an incredible job transitioning quickly in his first year of major college football, averaging nearly 18 yards per reception.

He’s averaging over 17 yards per catch so far again this season and has three touchdowns in four games. His route running will have to be dissected at the next level, and it’s going to be tough for NFL teams to justify his talent being picked this high while a guy like Courtland Sutton was not picked until the second round.

Still, Johnson’s special combination of size, athleticism, and playmaking ability could be worth it if he’s the missing piece of this Washington offense.
