College Football week six takeaways: Longhorns hook the Sooners
#16 Hurricanes overcome a 20-point deficit against Seminoles
With several big-time high school recruits in the crowd and a packed stadium of fans, a 27-7 deficit for the Miami Hurricanes in the third quarter was without a doubt worst case scenario.
However, the popular turnover chain, a second-half domination by the defense, and three second-half touchdown passes by redshirt freshman N’Kosi Perry elevated the Hurricanes to a 28-27 victory over their bitter rival Florida State.
The Seminoles were 14-point underdogs prior to the game but it was Miami that looked to be the underdogs early on. As FSU’s D.J. Matthews streaked down the left sideline for a 74-yard punt return touchdown, the home crowd moaned and an embarrassing loss appeared to be on its way for Miami.
Miami has the number two total defense in all of FBS and their play in the second half of the game completely turned around the contest. Back-to-back turnovers by the Seminole offense in the third quarter equaled 14 points for the Hurricanes and a 41-yard touchdown connection between Perry and tight end Brevin Jordan gave Miami the lead for good.
The 2018 season continues to be a rocky one for Florida State head coach Willie Taggert in his first season at the helm. The ‘Noles are now 3-3 with only one conference win and games against no. 4 Clemson, no. 20 North Carolina State, no. 5 Notre Dame and no. 14 Florida remaining on the schedule.
Miami continues to trend upward after a season-opening dud against no. 13 LSU. A win such as this only adds to what many believe is the best rivalry in all of college football.
