#10: John Elway torches Colts to make the playoffs
In 1983, Stanford quarterback John Elway made it clear he would not play for the Baltimore Colts if they drafted him. The Colts held the #1 pick that year. He had no desire to play for an organization he felt wasn’t committed to winning. The Colts took him anyway. Initially, their plan had been to hold his rights and work out a big trade package, but their GM Ernie Accorsi was overruled by ownership.
Elway was traded to Denver for what amounted to two 1st round picks, far less than what Accorsi had wanted. Sure enough, a few months later Elway gave them one last kick in the pants, throwing for over 300 yards and three touchdowns in a late-season win over them to reach the playoffs.
