Paul Brown is one of the greatest coaches in NFL history. There’s no arguing that. However, he did have one fatal flaw. He had zero patience when it came to players with personality. His championship greatness was due in large part to taking on many athletes who’d been in the military. They knew how to stand to attention and do as their told.

When he started to get a new breed of athletes, ones who didn’t serve time in a war and had a more rebellious nature, he grew tired of them quickly and sent them off to other teams. This mentality ended up costing him one of the greatest pass rushers in NFL history in Doug Atkins, who dominated in Chicago for a decade and helped them win the NFL championship in 1963.
