Nobody will remember the fact that the greatest quarterback in Bears history actually wasn’t acquired through a straight draft pick. Head coach and owner George Halas had to secure that pick in a deal with the then-Pittsburgh Pirates. At the time Pittsburgh was going through some financial troubles and needed breathing room. So they found a creative way to get it.

If the Bears would take on the large contract of Edgar Manske, they send along their 1st round pick in 1939 as compensation. Halas accepted. That pick became the #2 overall which was used on a kid named Sid Luckman from Columbia. He would lead the franchise to four NFL championships in the 1940s and help revolutionize the passing game along the way.
