This is a pure gift for Jerry Jones similar to how Derwin James landed in the Chargers lap at the 17th overall pick. With all the defensive linemen going so early, several big name players are starting to fall, including one of the best safeties in college football.

Dallas must have been crushed when they saw Seahawks safety Earl Thomas break his leg after months of trying to trade for him. The Cowboys need a leader and safety in their secondary with Byron Jones playing corner.

Thompson is all over the field for Alabama, making critical tackles and pass breakups. He’s set career highs this year with two picks and four pass deflections in just five games.

Dallas has some big pieces on their defense after adding Leighton Vander Esch last year to go with Jones, Jourdan Lewis, and Demarcus Lawrence. Thompson won’t be the final piece to the Cowboys defense, but he’s a major part of the puzzle that will get the Cowboys over the hump.
