NFL Grades: Report card for each QB after four games

CJ Beathard (San Francisco 49ers): NA
These are unfortunate times for the San Francisco 49ers organization after an exciting last couple of months. After acquiring Jimmy Garoppolo for peanuts from the Patriots the 49ers went 5-0 in 2017 with their new quarterback starting. This offseason the organization secured Garoppolo to a five year, $137.5 million deal with $74 million guaranteed, one of the biggest deals in league history. Unfortunately, Garoppolo didn’t last more than three games, tearing his ACL against Kansas City in the final minutes of a blowout loss at home.
Prior to the injury, Garoppolo had thrown five touchdowns and three picks while averaging nearly 240 yards per game. Things now look bleak in the Bay Area with CJ Beathard back under center following his rookie season when he went 1-4 as the starter.
The 104th overall pick in 2017 threw for nearly 300 yards in his first start this season in place of Garoppolo. There’s clearly something head coach Kyle Shanahan sees in Beathard after not just using a high draft pick on him, but having the confidence in him to be the starter, at least for now, for the remainder of the season.
In all likelihood, Beathard will be no better than average in the wake of Garoppolo’s injury and the 49ers will find themselves picking towards the top of the draft once again.
