NFL Grades: Report card for each QB after four games

Jared Goff (Los Angeles Rams): A
He’s been magnificent to start the year and his shredding of the Vikings for five touchdown passes was a rare perfect game as quarterbacks go. Jared Goff is living up to the billing as a #1 overall pick, showcasing the poise, accuracy, and intelligence that made him so coveted coming out of Cal. So why doesn’t he receive the absolute top marks? There are two reasons.
First is he had a somewhat average outing against the Arizona Cardinals despite gaining a lot of yards. The other is a ton of his success is being attributed to the brilliant play calling of head coach Sean McVay. It’s clear to see a lot of the big plays Goff has hit were beautifully designed and not too hard to throw. It’s why many persist in calling him a system QB.
That may not sound fair but it’s reality. The play calls have been genius. The pass protection was outstanding. Goff took a great situation and is running with it. He deserves tons of credit for the near-flawless execution thus far. What people want to see though is how he responds when he actually gets tested this season. It feels like that is still to come.
