Washington Redskins 2019 NFL Mock Draft: Gruden’s last stand?
By Craig Stofko
This is why they call it the war room. The debate here is likely to go ballistic. So when does the team draft Alex Smith’s successor? A third round pick seems a high price to pay considering if all goes as planned the young quarterback won’t see the field for three or even four years.
The only way the Redskins spend a top 100 pick on a quarterback this year is if there is someone sitting there that they absolute love. Thorson would qualify. It is unlikely the Northwestern star falls this far but it is entirely possible. The lack of talent surrounding him at Northwestern is going to prevent him from putting up any gaudy numbers. Some teams may hold his lack of productivity against him. That would work in the Redskins favor.
If Thorson is available at the bottom of the third round the Redskins should pull the trigger. He has everything needed, including a few years to be mentored by Smith, to be the future for the Redskins at the quarterback position. There would be some poetic justice in play here as well as Washington would be using the supplemental pick they received for Kirk Cousins.
