Virginia Tech suffers an upset

They entered as 28-point favorites. They departed with their first loss of the season.

On the “road,” the Virginia Tech Hokies suffered a major upset to once-winless Old Dominion, 49-35. Things started well for the Hokies as running back Steven Peoples torched the Old Dominion defense for an 87-yard touchdown run on Virginia Tech’s first play from scrimmage. However, they could never necessarily put the Monarchs away as the game was just a 7-point margin going into the fourth quarter.

A 28-point fourth quarter by Old Dominion sealed the victory, their first of the season. The Monarchs accomplished this feat with a backup quarterback who came into the game on Old Dominion’s second series of the game.

Junior quarterback Blake LaRussa passed for 495 yards and four touchdowns and also ran for another. It didn’t help that the Hokies also lost starting quarterback Justin Jackson late in the game to a leg injury and that may have been the punch in the gut that the Hokies could not endure.

The Hokies have had a wild year dating back to earlier in the offseason with the amount of dismissals, the season opening win over FSU, and now this.
