Saints to Watch
Drew Brees
Despite being banged up last year and his 40th Birthday on the horizon, Drew Brees dropped 439 yards on the Buccaneers in the season opener. Tampa is not the Legion of Boom, but any quarterback throwing over 400 yards in a game should be lauded.
Look for Brees to attack the Browns corners early and often with Michael Thomas having about a four inch advantage over Denzel Ward.
Alvin Kamara
After taking the league by storm his rookie year with 1,554 yards from scrimmage, Alvin Kamara, statistically, came up lame in the run game last week against Tampa Bay. However, don’t just look at the eight rushing attempts and 29 yards on the ground. Kamara had 112 receiving yards and three total touchdowns in the loss to Tampa Bay.
Kamara is one example of the new-age running back who can catch the ball out of the backfield and provide a threat as a running back. He continues to be one of the league’s best weapons, and he’ll strike constantly against the Browns, who gave up two touchdowns to James Conner last week.
Marcus Davenport
New Orleans invested a lot in Marcus Davenport this year after taking him 14th overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. They traded away next year’s first round pick, something that felt shortsighted considering the Saints quarterback situation with Drew Brees turning 40 in January.
Davenport’s box score was far from impressive in his NFL debut, finishing with an assisted tackle. Pro Football Focus listed Davenport with just 22 snaps, so the opportunities to get after Ryan Fitzpatrick were not abundant.
Davenport is a project coming out of UTSA, but the Saints hope he can be the long-term solution to their pass rush woes. Look to see if there’s some improvement from the rookie this week.
