A historic matchup reignites one of the greatest games ever played between the USC Trojans and the Texas Longhorns

The 2006 Rose Bowl is perhaps the greatest college football game ever played. Vince Young and the Texas Longhorns walked away as the National Champions while Reggie Bush and the USC  Trojan dynasty was disrupted.

Last year the two historic programs met again, and USC gained a bit of payback when they defeated the Longhorns in a double-overtime thriller 27-24.

Now they meet again but will it live up to the hype it is receiving? 12 years after their National Championship showdown, neither team finds itself at the level it was.

So far, Texas has lost their season opener to Maryland for the second year in a row, and then beat Tulsa by one score. Tom Herman’s resurrection of Texas is still a work in progress and hasn’t been able to replicate the success he had in Houston.

USC hasn’t been the same since Pete Carroll left almost a decade ago. There have been zero national titles added to the Trojans trophy case since Carroll’s NFL departure. USC’s absence from the College Football Playoffs seems wrong given the history tied to SC football. The same can be said for Texas as well.

While 2018 doesn’t appear to be the year that either team will finally make the playoffs, they need to make sure that when they look back on their ’18 season, they can use it as a building block for the future.
