Cody Thompson (WR – Toledo) vs. Miami (FL)

It’s not often a program like the Miami Hurricanes visit the Glass Bowl. In fact, the last Power Five school to visit Toledo was Iowa State back in 2015. Toledo wound up winning the game in double overtime, a game which featured sophomore Cody Thompson gaining 24 yards through the air and nearly returning a blocked punt for a touchdown.

Toledo doesn’t shy away from top programs and traveled to Miami last season, falling to the Hurricanes 52-30. The Rockets offense performed well, however, especially Thompson, who caught five passes for 114 yards in the loss. Unfortunately for Thompson, that would be his last full game of the season.

He broke his leg the following week against Eastern Michigan and was awarded a medical redshirt, allowing him to return to Toledo this season. After catching three passes for 68 yards and a touchdown in the opener against VMI, the Miami game will be his first action against an FBS opponent since the injury.

How Toledo moves Thompson around the field will be key. The Hurricanes boast one of the top secondaries, led by cornerback Michael Jackson, a potential first-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Lining Thompson up in various spots and playing fast will limit the number of snaps he plays opposite Jackson. Finding a better matchup for the school’s top receiver will not only create more opportunities for the Rockets downfield, but also enhance Thompson’s 2019 NFL Draft stock in what could be his last game against a ranked opponent.
