Matt Nagy’s agent (and former Bear) has great luck choosing coaches
By Erik Lambert
Matt Nagy was a relative wild card in NFL coaching circles when his name came up after the Chiefs exited the playoffs last season.
He’d only spent two years as an offensive coordinator and just one where he actually called the plays. Though his units had success both times, people weren’t sure what to make of the 39-year old. Was he seasoned enough, ready enough to take on the colossal task of becoming head coach of an NFL franchise? Andy Reid, one of the great for the past 20 years gave a huge vote of confidence. Another who did as well was Nagy’s agent.
That might not sound like much. Agents are supposed to hype up their clients, but this is different. Chicago Bears fans should remember the name, Trace Armstrong. He’s a former 1st round pick of the team in 1989 and was one of their best pass rushers for five seasons, helping them to reach the playoffs three times. He eventually retired with over 100 sacks in his career and soon transitioned into the business side of the sport as an agent.
His specialty became representing head coaches. One thing his for sure, his playing career taught him what the great ones look like and according to Dan Pompei of The Athletic, it’s par the reason he came to represent Nagy.
Matt Nagy has a bright future based on what Armstrong sees

"Armstrong played for Ditka, Don Shula, Jimmy Johnson and Jon Gruden, all of whom coached Super Bowl winners. He also represents Mike McCarthy, who won a Super Bowl. And he represented Urban Meyer, who won three national championships. He knows a good coach when he sees one.“Matt’s great,” he says. “When a lot of guys get into that role as a head coach, they wrestle with making decisions because they aren’t really clear on who they are as leaders. They get themselves in trouble with the team because they are either slow to make decisions, or they make a decision and then reverse course. Matt isn’t like that. He has complete confidence in who he is.”"
It seems rather fitting that the two head coaches, Nagy and McCarthy, are set to square off in the season opener of 2018 and are both represented by Armstrong. That has to be a good sign for the Bears. The man has a remarkable streak of good luck when it comes to encountering those who either had or will soon have great success in the NFL.
Armstrong was never able to bring a Super Bowl to Chicago as a player despite trying so hard. It would seem rather fitting if he found a roundabout way by ushering in the head coach who would break the streak after more than 30 years. Either way it’s a welcome sign that the Bears may have finally gotten their choice right.
