Carolina Panthers

5. player. 87. . QB. Carolina Panthers. Jeff Lewis

The Carolina Panthers haven’t had any true blockbuster trades but there are plenty they’d like to have back. Probably the biggest black eye they ever got came in 1999. The team was going with Steve Beuerlein as their starter that season but needed insurance in case he got hurt. The Denver Broncos appeared to offer their salvation, making backup Jeff Lewis available.

Lewis was coming out of that Mike Shanahan system, one that had seemed to elevate quarterbacks to show their true ability. Lewis was eagerly awaiting his shot to ascend so Carolina gave up 3rd and 4th round picks to get him. The move proved pointless though. Beuerlein went to the Pro Bowl that year and would be the starter again in 2000.

Lewis never started a single game for the team and was out of the league after that season. Those picks they gave up wound up helping Denver quickly retool and go on to further success in the AFC.
