The Worst Trade For Every NFL Team In History
By Erik Lambert
Oakland Raiders
The funny thing about this trade is that the player targeted and the decision to go get him actually weren’t wrong. The Oakland Raiders were later proven right that Palmer had plenty left in the tank, but only after they traded him to Arizona where he rebounded to near-MVP status under Bruce Arians. The problem was they did have the support structure needed to maximize him.
Also? Their timing was bad. They traded 1st and 2nd round picks to the Cincinnati Bengals for his rights. At that point in time, the team was 4-3 going into the bye week and playing some inspired football following the death of owner Al Davis. Quarterback Jason Campbell wasn’t setting the world on fire but he managing games well enough.
Still, head coach Hue Jackson felt the team needed to try for more, so they went after Palmer and thrust him right into the starting job. It became clear he was rusty and couldn’t quite mesh with the system, throwing a lot of interceptions. Oakland felt to 8-8 and Jackson was unceremoniously fired after just one season. He threw for over 4,000 yards in 2012 but the new coaching staff wanted to go in a different direction and he was traded to Arizona the next year.
