Believe it or not, there was a time when the Green Bay Packers didn’t have a magic touch at the quarterback position. The 1970s were a dark period for the franchise. The Vince Lombardi era, led by the great Bart Starr was over. The team was desperately trying to recapture the glory days and knew they needed a QB to get it jumpstarted.

Each of their attempts to do so wasn’t working though. Finally, by 1974 they’d had enough of playing the patient approach. They were going all out to find an instant fix. In a blockbuster move, they had two 1st, two 2nd, and 3rd round picks to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for quarterback John Hadl. It seemed like a decent idea at the time.

Hadl was a six-time Pro Bowler who’d been All-Pro in 1973. He might be able to elevate the team to playoff contention again. There was a problem though. The Packers lacked a solid foundation on offense and Hadl was 34-year olds. Anybody with common sense should’ve seen it was doomed from the start. That trade set the franchise back for years.
