College Football Week One Takeaways: Hurricanes fizzle out
New Faces For The Pac-12
There were a handful of head coaching eras getting underway in the Pac-12 conference. Some good, some not so good.
The UCLA Bruins debuted the Chip Kelly tenure only in a losing fashion as a home loss to the Cincinnati Bearcats delayed Kelly’s first win with UCLA. The offensive numbers were not there for Kelly and the Bruins and he even had to turn to his true freshman quarterback in hopes of getting a spark.
New Arizona State head coach Herm Edwards got his tenure off to a solid start thanks to a 49-7 victory over UTSA. Powering that victory for the Sun Devils was an offense that totaled 266 rushing yards and a dominant performance by receiver N’Keal Harry. Many are viewing Herm Edwards as the head coach for Arizona State with plenty of questions and doubt. The opening season win answers some questions but conference play will tell all for the former NFL head coach.
Speaking of Arizona State, their arch rival did not fare well in the opening debut of head coach Kevin Sumlin. Heisman hopeful Khalil Tate is a dynamic dual-threat quarterback but in this matchup against BYU, Tate was largely held in check with only 211 total yards of offense.
Sumlin’s philosophy and coaching style will fit well with the Wildcats over time but something is to be said of Arizona’s inability to attack a BYU defense that allowed six games last season of 400 or more total yards allowed.
