College Football Week One Takeaways: Hurricanes fizzle out
Maryland upsets Texas, again
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on the Longhorns.
For the second consecutive year, the Texas Longhorns lost their season opener to the Maryland Terrapins. Last season, it was a 51-41 shootout that went in the favor of Maryland thanks to 482 total yards given up by the Longhorns, including 263 of those yards coming via the run game.
This time around, it was a little less scoring but the Maryland offense was still giving the Texas defense a few problems. Three turnovers by the Texas offense on their final three drives drove a stake into their chances of winning.
A weather delay that lasted almost an hour and a half came late in the second half but the Longhorns was unable to grab control of the game afterwards. It didn’t help that Maryland jumped out to a 24-7 lead halfway through the second quarter.
To Maryland, this was not only an upset win over an elite program such as Texas but it was a breath of fresh air for the program after what transpired from the death of former teammate Jordan McNair back in late May.
To Texas, it was another puzzling occurrence for the program, one that has stumbled to find their footing consistently since the days of former head coach Mack Brown. Current head coach Tom Herman has some explaining to do as the pressure meter is cranked up a notch in regards to his future.
