Buffalo finished the 2008 season 7-9 and desperate for a pass rusher. Kawika Mitchell and Ryan Denney each had four sacks to lead the team, and the team finished third-last in sacks.

Aaron Maybin led the Big Ten with 12 sacks and 20 tackles for loss in his second season at Penn State, leading him to declare for the NFL Draft in 2009. Drafted 11th overall by Buffalo, a lot of pressure was put on Maybin to avoid being a one-year wonder.

The once-feared pass rusher did absolutely nothing in his first two seasons with the Bills. Despite appearing in 27 games Maybin recorded zero sacks, one forced fumble and just 14 tackles. He made only one start for the Bills before they released him during training camp in 2011.

Maybin would sign with the Jets, with whom he had moderate success picking up six sacks and four forced fumbles, but just 10 tackles, in 13 games during the 2011 season. After making just one tackle in eight games the next year New York cut Maybin, and he never played another regular season NFL game again despite signing a deal with Cincinnati.

The Toronto Argonauts of the CFL signed Maybin in 2013, but he appeared in just one game before retiring.

Maybin is now an art activist, and two years ago I had the opportunity to interview him about his work. He said he’d rather be known as someone who helped build up communities than someone who was a pretty good football player, saying the later would be a waste of his life.
