Jarvis Jones. . team. 55. . 2013, 17th overall.

Pittsburgh has always been known for having a rough, menacing defense that lit up opponents on a weekly basis. With the 17th overall pick in 2013 they thought that tradition would carry on.

Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones was coming off two spectacular seasons for the Bulldogs with 28 sacks, 44 tackles for loss, and 155 total tackles.

Pittsburgh selected Jones after finishing with one of the best defenses in the league despite going 8-8. They ranked first in defensive yards and sixth in points allowed and eighth in sack percentage, taking down quarterbacks every 6.6 passing plays.

Jones started eight games as a rookie but came up with just one sack and 31 tackles. A wrist injury limited him to seven games as a sophomore with nine tackles and two sacks. He matched those two sacks the following season in 15 starts with 14 tackles and an interception.

Pittsburgh declined Jones’s fifth-year option going into his fourth season, during which he also failed to pick up any stats. In 14 games he had just one sack and 30 tackles before the Steelers let him walk in free agency.

Unfortunately for the Steelers 8 of the next 14 picks after Jones would be Pro Bowlers, including Travis Frederick, Desmond Trufant, Xavier Rhodes, and DeAndre Hopkins.
