NFL Draft: Every team’s biggest first round bust of last ten years
Oakland has had some majors hits and misses over the last decades worth of NFL Drafts from Khalil Mack and Amari Cooper to Darren McFadden, DJ Hayden, and Darrius Heyward-Bey.
There are a couple ways to break down Oakland’s worst first round pick of the last decade, whether it be longevity or productiveness of the players taken.
Hayden was our choice for the Raiders worst first round pick of the last decade after he spent just seasons with the club. At the University of Houston Hayden proved to be a ballhawk with six interceptions, half of which went for touchdowns, in two seasons.
Oakland traded back from the third-overall pick in a deal with Miami that netted them the 42nd overall pick in return, allowing them to draft Hayden.
The cornerback struggled to stay healthy early with Oakland, undergoing abdominal and sports hernia surgeries during his rookie season, which ultimately left him on injured reserve. The rookie made just two starts and made one interception in eight games during the 2013 season.
A foot injury slowed Hayden down his sophomore year, limiting him to just 10 games and eight starts. He finally stayed healthy in 2015, starting 13 games but making just one interception. After 11 games in the final guaranteed year of his rookie contract, Hayden went on injured reserve again, this time with a hamstring injury.
Detroit gave Hayden an opportunity to play in 2017, but despite appearing in every game he failed to make his first interception since 2015. He has made 35 pass deflections since coming into the league, but turnovers are what pay the bills if you’re a defensive back.
Jacksonville has Hayden on their roster going into the final week of camp, but he won’t see many starts with AJ Boye and Jalen Ramsey in house.
