NFL Draft: Every team’s biggest first round bust of last ten years
The Packers have had a pretty solid reputation of first round picks in the last decade. However, not all of them have contributed greatly. Their first round pick in 2013, Datone Jones, never really panned out as an edge rusher and he’s played a couple different places since then. However, their worst first round pick of the last decade came in the draft after Green Bay won the Super Bowl.
The offense was loaded coming into the 2011 season at the skill positions, so Green Bay wanted to add depth along the offensive line, especially with Chad Clifton at age 34 at the time. At the end of the first round, the Packers selected Derek Sherrod out of Mississippi State.
Sherrod didn’t end up panning out for the Packers at all. He only played in five games in his rookie season, and broke his leg late in the season. He spent all of 2012 recovering from the injury, and only played in 15 more games in 2013 and 2014 combined. The Packers let him walk in free agency after the 2014 season.
In his career, Sherrod played in 20 games total and got only one start in that time. He went to Kansas City for a year and was eventually cut in 2015.
Sherrod is ultimately the worst first round pick of the last decade due to his lack of games played due to injury. When looking back at the 2011 draft, there were a couple big names who could have landed in Green Bay instead of Sherrod. The biggest names later in the draft were Rodney Hudson and Marcus Gilbert, both of whom have carved out pretty good careers.
