Cleveland Browns

8. player. 53. . C. Western Illinois. Frank Winters

A lot of things went wrong for the Cleveland Browns when Marty Schottenheimer left in 1989. One of the first things was their failure to keep center Frank Winters. Given a little more time it’s likely Schottenheimer would’ve seen what the 10th round selection could do. Sadly the team let him go after just two seasons. After three seasons in New York and Kansas City, the Green Bay Packers got hold of him.

Right away their head coach Mike Holmgren saw the potential as a pass protector. Winters was made the start his first year and would hold that job for the next eight seasons. During that time he blocked for all three of Brett Favre‘s MVP runs and paved the way for the 1996 Super Bowl championship, during which he made the Pro Bowl. It seems rather fitting the Browns left Cleveland the year before that happened.
