Pittsburgh Steelers

Brent Jones . 27. player. 55. . TE. Santa Clara

Pittsburgh has a great history of drafting and cultivating its own talent. This situation with Brent Jones had less to do with their own incompetence and more to do with a misjudgment due to an unforeseen circumstance. Jones was a 5th round pick in 1986 but got into a car accident before the season began. The Steelers tried to keep him on the roster for as long as possible while he was recovering but were forced to release him in the end.

Once healed up he signed as a free agent with the San Francisco 49ers. From there he would become a fixture of their famous West Coast offense, enjoying a productive career with four Pro Bowl trips and three Super Bowl rings. Steelers fans are left wondering what might’ve been had the injured reserve rules of today been around back then. One must imagine it would’ve been nice having Jones during their Super Bowl run in 1995.
