Oakland Raiders

Jessie Hester . 25. player. 28. . WR. Florida State

There were a lot of reasons why the drafting of Jessie Hester didn’t work out for the Los Angeles Raiders. Two of the biggest factors was an archaic offensive philosophy and a poor quarterback situation. The Raiders loved to run a classic vertical offense where the wide receivers were primarily tasked with going deep, stretching out defenses. Hester, who had legitimate speed, seemed like a nice fit for that system.

He just wasn’t utilized to his fullest potential. His first two years he did his job, averaging over 23 yards per catch. Still, when Marc Wilson and a 39-year old Jim Plunkett are your quarterbacks it’s difficult to thrive. Oakland cut him loose after three seasons. He signed on with the Indianapolis Colts where he would post four-straight years over 750 yards receiving including 924 in 1990.
