New York Giants

WR. Stanford. Ed McCaffrey . 23. player. 31.

The New York Giants have a strong reputation for drafting good wide receivers. That doesn’t mean they always recognized when they did so. One can only imagine how the top brass felt when they realized how badly they misjudged Ed McCaffrey. Drafting him in the 3rd round, he had a quiet 1991 rookie year before showcasing some of what he could do with 610 yards in 1992. That’s why his regression the next season was a bit of a disappointment and resulted in his released.

Ironically this was aided by the dismissal of head coach Ryan Handley who had helped draft him. Dan Reeves came in and made the decision to cut the young receiver. That decision came back to haunt him five years later. As head coach of the Atlanta Falcons when McCaffrey played a big role in his team’s defeat at the hands of the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl. That was the same year McCaffrey went to the Pro Bowl. The first of three-straight 1,000-yard seasons.
