Defensive coaches these days have a better grasp of how to employ players in roles that best fit their abilities rather than trying to cram them into ones they just don’t fit. For three years the Houston Texans didn’t recognize that Jason Babin wasn’t an outside linebacker in the traditional sense. His game was centered around going forward and after the quarterback.
The guy was a pass rusher. That’s what he did. Despite three years of decent production and signs of improvement, Houston cut him loose. After bouncing around the league for a couple years, he landed in Tennessee where they understood right away what he could do. Babin broke out for 12.5 sacks. The next year he signed in Philadelphia and posted another 18, making his second of two Pro Bowl appearances.
