#3:  The Fake Punt

Parcells famously told Sean Payton before the Saints’ Super Bowl against Indianapolis in 2009 that in order to win he’d have to steal a possession somehow. In other words, he had to take a gamble on some kind of gadget special teams play to avoid giving the ball back to the opponent. This was an art Parcells perfected during his time with the Giants.

It took root in Super Bowl XXI against the Denver Broncos. Trailing 10-9 early in the third quarter, the Giants sent out their punt unit on 4th and 1. However, they quickly shifted to a formation that signaled a fake. Twice quarterback Jeff Rutledge looked to Parcells for confirmation. Both times he nodded. Rutledge ran a quarterback sneak and got the first down.

The Giants went on to score a touchdown and would rack up 30 points total in the second half, crushing the Broncos 39-20 for their first world championship in 30 years.
